Learn More about Buying Used Cell Phones & the Wireless Industry Did you originally get a free or inexpensive cell phone from your wireless phone service provider, only to be told later it will cost you alot more money to get a replacement cell phone? Were you told you have to wait a year or two before you can buy another cell phone at a discounted price? What is going on here!? The Wireless Cell Phone Industry It all begins with the cell phone manufacturer. These companies produce the cell phones we use at a certain cost. For example, a manufacturer makes a cell phone at $100 cost. They then sell the cell phone to wireless cell phone carriers at a marked-up price, like $200. Then this same cell phone makes it to you, the consumer, via the stores of the wireless cell phone carrier. In these stores, the retail price of the cell phone gets marked up, and in our example, the cell phone may cost you $250 to $300, if it is purchased without a contract. This seems pretty simple. It is just the typical capitalistic machine in action. From manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer, everybody gets what they want at increasing cost and retail value. But unfortunately, in the wireless industry, the process becomes more complicated. In our example, the wireless phone carrier is willing to sell you a cell phone that cost them $200 for $50-$100 higher so they make a profit. This is only when you buy the cell phone without any contractual obligation to the company. However, when you decide that you will sign a 1 or 2 year contract with the wireless phone carrier, they will give you a discount or "subsidy" on the cell phone price. This discount serves as an incentive for you to "lock-in" with their company as a guaranteed paying customer. After rebates and discounts, you will usually end up paying $80-$120 below cost for a cell phone if you sign a 2 year contract. Again in our example, the wireless cell phone carrier sells you a cell phone for $100 that actually cost them $200. They lose $100 to lock you into a 2 year contract. Obviously, they will make their money back by having you as a consistently paying customer for the next couple of years. So what happens when you try get the wireless phone carrier to give you a replacement cell phone for the cell phone you misplaced or damaged or have begun to hate? Usually, when you are still within the first one and a half years of your contract, wireless cell phone carriers will not give you the discounted or "subsidy" price off of a new cell phone. They want you to reach the point of your initial contract where they feel you have sufficiently paid off the loss they sustained from the first discount phone sale. Many companies want you to wait 21 months of a 24 month contract before they will let you sign another contract to get another discount phone price. So until that point in the contract, the wireless phone carrier will usually offer only 3 options: 1.) Buy a new cell phone at full retail price, 2.) Sign an "exception" contract extension where you are eligible to renew your contract but will still have to pay full cost for the cell phone because of the "exception" status, or 3.) Wait until you are eligible to sign a "normal" contract extension so you can receive the discount off of cost. To many people, these are not acceptable options.
